a-r-c-s: The Social Value of Lower Stable Street
Project Description
Since 2018, a-r-c-s has curated and managed Lower Stable Street in Coal Drops Yard on behalf of Related Argent – transforming a once-underused thoroughfare into a vibrant, inclusive hub for small businesses, creatives and communities.
In 2024, a-r-c-s commissioned RealWorth to evaluate the social impact of its activities over a 12-month period using the Social Return on Investment approach. The study assessed how a-r-c-s distinctive model – flexible turnover-based rents, community driven programming, and free event space – supports inclusive growth and cultural participation in King’s Cross.
The evaluation found that a-r-c-s’ work generated £3.01 million in total social value, demonstrating that placemaking rooted in creativity and social purpose can deliver tangible benefits for businesses, visitors, and the wider community.
Key contributors included the community market, Lower Stable Street Units, Kiosk N1C Event Space and Heatherwick Kiosks, all of which supported independent enterprise, community connection, and creative opportunity.
Key outcomes of Lower Stable Street include:
